Rotation number of interval contracted rotations

Abstract

Let 0<λ<10<\lambda<1. We consider the one-parameter family of circle λ\lambda-affine contractions fδ:x[0,1)λx+δ  mod1f_\delta:x \in [0,1) \mapsto \lambda x + \delta \; {\rm mod}\,1 , where 0δ<10 \le \delta <1. Let ρ\rho be the rotation number of the map fδf_\delta. We will give some numerical relations between the values of λ,δ\lambda,\delta and ρ\rho, essentially using Hecke-Mahler series and a tree structure. When both parameters λ\lambda and δ\delta are algebraic numbers, we show that ρ\rho is a rational number. Moreover, in the case λ\lambda and δ\delta are rational, we give an explicit upper bound for the height of ρ\rho under an assumption on λ\lambda.
