Rigidity and flexibility of group actions on the circle

Abstract

We survey rigidity results for groups acting on the circle in various settings, from local to global and C0C^0 to smooth. Our primary focus is on actions of surface groups, with the aim of introducing the reader to recent developments and new tools to study groups acting by homeomorphisms.
