Resistors in dual networks

Combinatorics 2018-05-04 v1

Abstract

Let GG be a finite plane multigraph and GG' its dual. Each edge ee of GG is interpreted as a resistor of resistance ReR_e, and the dual edge ee' is assigned the dual resistance Re:=1/ReR_{e'}:=1/R_e. Then the equivalent resistance rer_e over ee and the equivalent resistance rer_{e'} over ee' satisfy re/Re+re/Re=1r_e/R_e+r_{e'}/R_{e'}=1. We provide a graph theoretic proof of this relation by expressing the resistances in terms of sums of weights of spanning trees in GG and GG' respectively.
