Abstract

We prove for finite reductive groups GG of classical type, that every irreducible character of LL extends to its inertia group in NN, where LL is an abelian centraliser of a Sylow dd-torus S\mathbf S of GG and N:=NG(S)N:=N_G(\mathbf S). This gives a precise description of the irreducible characters of NN. Furthermore it enables us to verify the McKay conjecture in this situation for GG and some primes.
