Recurrence on Affine Grassmannians

Abstract

We study the action of the affine group GG of Rd\mathbb{R}^d on the space Xk,dX_{k,\,d} of kk-dimensional affine subspaces. Given a compactly-supported Zariski dense probability measure μ\mu on GG, we show that Xk,dX_{k,\,d} supports a μ\mu-stationary measure ν\nu if and only if the (k ⁣+ ⁣1)th(k\!+\!1)^{\rm th}-Lyapunov exponent of μ\mu is strictly negative. In particular, when μ\mu is symmetric, ν\nu exists if and only if 2kd2k\geq d.
