Reciprocity and orthogonality

Abstract

Let pp be a prime and let KK be a finite extension of the field Qp{\bf Q}_p of pp-adic numbers such that the group pK×{}_pK^\times has order pp. The Fp{\bf F}_p-space K× ⁣/K×pK^\times\!/K^{\times p} carries a natural filtration coming from the valuation on KK, and a natural bilinear pairing coming from the reciprocity isomorphism for the exponent~pp. We determine the orthogonal filtration for this pairing. We also prove the analogous result for pp-fields of characteristic pp.
