Quadratic torsion subgroups of modular Jacobian varieties

Abstract

Let DD be an odd square-free positive integer and CC a divisor of DD. For any quadratic character χ\chi modulo CC, we prove that the χ\chi-part of the group J0(DC)torJ_0(DC)_\text{tor} of torsion points of J0(DC)J_0(DC) coincides with the χ\chi-part of its cuspidal subgroup, away from those primes of bad reduction or where possible congruences between oldforms and newforms occur.
