Probing Gluons in Nuclei: the Case of $\eta'$

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology 2009-11-07 v1 Nuclear Theory

Abstract

Using the recently proposed gg>etagg --> eta' effective vertex, we investigate the production of η\eta' from gluon fusion in pApA collisions. We show that measuring η\eta' production cross-section at moderate xηx_{\eta'} yields direct information on the small xx gluon distribution function of the nucleus. At RHIC, the smallest accessible xx turns out to be O(105)O(10^{-5}) and at LHC, it is O(108)O(10^{-8}). Therefore, η\eta' is an excellent probe of the Color Glass Condensate.
