Powers in finite groups

Abstract

In this note we prove that if GG is a finitely generated profinite group then the verbal subgroup GqG^{q} is open. Equivalently in a dd-generator finite group every product of qqth powers is a product of f(d,q)f(d,q) qqth powers.
