Abstract

A multi-graph GG on nn vertices is (k,)(k,\ell)-sparse if every subset of nnn'\leq n vertices spans at most knkn'- \ell edges. GG is {\em tight} if, in addition, it has exactly knkn - \ell edges. For integer values kk and [0,2k)\ell \in [0, 2k), we characterize the (k,)(k,\ell)-sparse graphs via a family of simple, elegant and efficient algorithms called the (k,)(k,\ell)-pebble games.
