$p$-elements in profinite groups

Group Theory 2024-07-01 v1

Abstract

We investigate some properties of the pp-elements of a profinite group GG. We prove that if pp is odd and the probability that a randomly chosen element of GG is a pp-element is positive, then GG contains an open prosolvable subgroup. On the contrary, there exist groups that are not virtually prosolvable but in which the probability that a randomly chosen element of GG is a 2-element is arbitrarily close to 1. We prove also that if a profinite group GG has the property that, for every pp-element xx, it is positive the probability that a randomly chosen element yy of GG generates with xx a pro-pp group, then GG contains an open pro-pp subgroup.
