Orthogonal subsets of root systems and the orbit method

Abstract

Let kk be the algebraic closure of a finite field, GG a Chevalley group over kk, UU the maximal unipotent subgroup of GG. To each orthogonal subset DD of the root system of the group GG and each set ξ\xi of D|D| non-zero scalars from kk one can assign the coadjoint orbit of the group UU. We prove that the dimension of such an orbit does not depend on ξ\xi. We also give an upper bound of the dimension in terms of the Weyl group.
