Orthogonal latin rectangles

Combinatorics 2007-05-23 v3

Abstract

We use a greedy probabilistic method to prove that for every ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, every m×nm\times n Latin rectangle on nn symbols has an orthogonal mate, where m=(1ϵ)nm=(1-\epsilon)n. That is, we show the existence of a second Latin rectangle such that no pair of the mnmn cells receives the same pair of symbols in the two rectangles.
