On the Prime Graph Question for Almost Simple Groups with an Alternating Socle

Group Theory 2017-06-27 v2 Representation Theory

Abstract

Let GG be an almost simple group with socle AnA_n, the alternating group of degree nn. We prove that there is a unit of order pqpq in the integral group ring of GG if and only if there is an element of that order in GG provided pp and qq are primes greater than n3\frac{n}{3}. We combine this with some explicit computations to verify the Prime Graph Question for all almost simple groups with socle AnA_n if n17n \leq 17.
