On polarizations in invariant theory

Abstract

Given a reductive algebraic group GG and a finite dimensional algebraic GG-module VV, we study how close is the algebra of GG-invariant polynomials on VnV^{\oplus n} to the subalgebra generated by polarizations of GG-invariant polynomials on VV. We address this problem in a more general setting of GG-actions on arbitrary affine varieties.
