On MSR Subspace Families of Lines

Abstract

A minimum storage regenerating (MSR) subspace family of Fq2m\mathbb{F}_q^{2m} is a set S\mathcal{S} of mm-spaces in Fq2m\mathbb{F}_q^{2m} such that for any mm-space SS in S\mathcal{S} there exists an element in PGL(2m,q)\mathrm{PGL}(2m, q) which maps SS to a complement and fixes S{S}\mathcal{S} \setminus \{ S \} pointwise. We show that an MSR subspace family of 22-spaces in Fq4\mathbb{F}_q^4 has at most size 66 with equality if and only if it is a particular subset of a Segre variety. This implies that an (n,n2,4)(n, n-2, 4)-MSR code has n9n \leq 9.
