On commutators of idempotents

Abstract
Let be an operator on Banach space that is similar to via an involution . Then decomposes the Banach space as with respect to which decomposition we have , where is the identity operator on the closed subspace (). Furthermore, has necessarily the form with respect to the same decomposition. In this note we consider the question when is a commutator of the idempotent and some idempotent on . We also determine which scalar multiples of unilateral shifts on spaces () are commutators of idempotent operators.
