Normal matrices

Spectral Theory 2021-06-03 v1

Abstract

Let AA be a square complex matrix and zz a complex number. The distance, with respect to the spectral norm, from AA to the set of matrices which have zz as an eigenvalue is less than or equal to the distance from zz to the spectrum of AA. If these two distances are equal for a sufficiently large finite set of numbers zz which are not in the spectrum of AA, then the matrix AA is normal.
