Monomial retracts of polynomial rings are polynomial rings

Abstract

Let RR be a ring and B=R[X1,,Xn]B = R[X_1, \dots, X_n] the polynomial ring in nn variables over RR. In this article, we consider retractions φ:BB\varphi : B \longrightarrow B such that φ(Xi)\varphi(X_i) is either a monic monomial or 00. We prove that if RR is an integral domain, then any such retract is isomorphic to R[p]R^{[p]}, the polynomial ring in pp variables over RR, for some 0pn0 \le p \le n. We also characterize different monomial retractions of BB which give the same retract.
