Abstract
We put forward a novel approach to study the evolution of an arbitrary open quantum system under a resetting process. Using the framework of renewal equations, we find a universal behavior for the mean first return time that goes beyond unitary dynamics and Markovian measurements. Our results show a non-trivial behavior of the mean switching times with the mean measurement time , which permits tuning for minimizing the mean transition time between states. We complement our results with a numerical analysis and we benchmark the results against the corresponding analytical study for low dimensional systems under unitary \textit{and} open system dynamics.
