Longest convex chains

Probability 2009-07-01 v1 Combinatorics

Abstract

Assume XnX_n is a random sample of nn uniform, independent points from a triangle TT. The longest convex chain, YY, of XnX_n is defined naturally. The length Y|Y| of YY is a random variable, denoted by LnL_n. In this article, we determine the order of magnitude of the expectation of LnL_n. We show further that LnL_n is highly concentrated around its mean, and that the longest convex chains have a limit shape.
