Lifting independence along functors

Category Theory 2025-09-03 v2 Logic

Abstract

Given a functor F:CDF: \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{D} and a model-theoretic independence relation on D\mathcal{D}, we can lift that independence relation along FF to C\mathcal{C} by declaring a commuting square in C\mathcal{C} to be independent if its image under FF is independent. For each property that an independence relation can have we give assumptions on the functor that guarantee the property to be lifted.
