Abstract

In response to questions by Kassabov, Nikolov and Shalev, we show that a given subset AA of a finite simple group GG is the image of some word map w:G×GGw : G\times G\to G if and only if (i) AA contains the identity and (ii) AA is invariant under \Aut(G)\Aut (G).
