Halving formulae for points on elliptic curves

Number Theory 2023-02-02 v1 Algebraic Geometry

Abstract

Let PP be an arbitrary point on an elliptic curve over the complex numbers of the form y2=x3+a4x+a6y^2=x^3+a_4\,x+a_6 or of the form y2=x3+a2x2+a4xy^2=x^3+a_2\,x^2+a_4\,x. We provide explicit formulae to compute the points P/2P/2, i.e., the points QQ such that 2Q=P2*Q=P.
