Fractional Isoperimetric Inequalities and subgroup distortion

Group Theory 2008-02-03 v1

Abstract

It is shown that there exist infinitely many non-integers r>2r>2 such that the Dehn function of some finitely presented group is nr\simeq n^r. For each positive rational number ss we construct pairs of finitely presented groups HGH\subset G such that the distortion of HH in GG is ns\simeq n^s. And for each s1s\ge 1 we also construct finitely presented groups whose isodiametric function is ns\simeq n^s.
