First coniveau notch of the Dwork family and its mirror

Algebraic Geometry 2009-03-05 v3

Abstract

If XλX_{\lambda} is a smooth member of the Dwork family over a perfect field kk, and YλY_{\lambda} is its mirror variety, then the motives of XλX_{\lambda} and YλY_{\lambda} are equal up to motives that are in coniveau 1\geq 1. If kk is a finite field, this provides a motivic explanation for Wan's congruence between the zeta functions of XλX_{\lambda} and YλY_{\lambda}.
