Abstract

We show that if RR is a local domain which is dominated by a valuation ν\nu, then there does not always exist a regular local ring RR' which birationally dominates R and is dominated by ν\nu and an extension of ν\nu to the Henselization (R)h(R')^h of RR' such that the associated graded rings of RR' and (R)h(R')^h along the valuations are equal. We also show that there does not always exist RR', a prime ideal pp of the completion R^\widehat{R'} such that pR=(0)p\cap R'=(0) and an extension of ν\nu to R^\widehat{R'} such that the associated graded rings of RR' and R^/p\widehat{R'}/p along the valuation are equal.
