Abstract
We study the zero-temperature magnetization curve (M-H curve) of the S=1 bilinear-biquadratic spin chain, whose Hamiltonian is given by H=∑iSiSi+1+β(SiSi+1)2with0 \leq \beta <1.Wefocusonvalidityofthedelta−functionbose−gaspicturenearthetwocriticalfields:thesaturationfieldH_sandthelowercriticalfieldH_cassociatedwiththeHaldanegap.NearH_s,wetake‘‘low−energyeffectiveS−matrix′′approach,whichgivescorrecteffectivebose−gascouplingconstantc,differentfromthespin−wavevalue.ComparingtheM−Hcurveofthebosegaswiththeproduct−wavefunctionrenormalizationgroup(PWFRG)calculation,excellentagreementisseen.NearH_c,comparingthePWFRGresultwiththebose−gasprediction,wefindthattherearetwodistinctregionsof\betaseparatedbyacriticalvalue\beta_c(\approx 0.41).Intheregion0<\beta<\beta_c,theeffectivecouplingcispositivebutrathersmall.Thesmallvalueofcmakesthe‘‘criticalregion′′ofthesquare−rootbehaviorM\sim \sqrt{H-H_c}verynarrow.Further,wefindthatinthe\beta \to \beta_c-0,thesquare−rootbehaviortransmutestoadifferentone,M\sim (H-H_c)^{1/4}.Intheregion\beta_c<\beta <1,thesquare−rootbehaviorisratherdistinct,buttheeffectivecouplingc$ becomes negative.
