Decidability of the extension problem for maps into odd-dimensional spheres

Algebraic Topology 2014-01-17 v1 Computational Geometry

Abstract

In a recent paper, it was shown that the problem of existence of a continuous map XYX \to Y extending a given map AYA \to Y defined on a subspace AXA \subseteq X is undecidable, even for YY an even-dimensional sphere. In the present paper, we prove that the same problem for YY an odd-dimensional sphere is decidable. More generally, the same holds for any dd-connected target space YY whose homotopy groups πkY\pi_k Y are finite for k>2dk>2d.
