Cyclotomic character fields and sets of primes

Abstract

Let π={2,q}\pi=\{ 2, q \} where qq is an odd prime. Let GG be a finite group of order divisible by a prime pπp \in \pi. We show that the principal pp-block of GG contains a nontrivial irreducible character of degree not divisible by 22 nor qq and with field of values contained in the qqth cyclotomic extension. This statement simultaneously provides a principal block version of results of Navarro--Tiep and Giannelli--Hung--Schaeffer Fry--Vallejo.
