Abstract

Let MM be a real r×cr\times c matrix and let kk be a positive integer. In the column subset selection problem (CSSP), we need to minimize the quantity MSA\|M-SA\|, where AA can be an arbitrary k×ck\times c matrix, and SS runs over all r×kr\times k submatrices of MM. This problem and its applications in numerical linear algebra are being discussed for several decades, but its algorithmic complexity remained an open issue. We show that CSSP is NP-complete.
