Characterizing of Inner Product Spaces by the Mapping $n_{x,y}$

Abstract

For the vectors xx and yy in a normed linear spaces XX, the mapping nx,y:RRn_{x,y}: \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R} is defined by nx,y(t)=x+tyn_{x,y}(t)=\|x+ty\|. In this note, comparing the mappings nx,yn_{x,y} and ny,xn_{y,x} we obtain a simple and useful characterization of inner product spaces.
