Characterization of solutions of a generalized Helmholtz problem

Analysis of PDEs 2023-07-03 v1

Abstract

In this article, we classify all distributional solutions of f(Δ)u=f(1)uf(-\Delta)u=f(1)u where ff is a non-constant Bernstein function. Specifically, we show that the Fourier transform of uu is a single-layer distribution on the unit sphere. Examples of such operators include (Δ)σ(-\Delta)^\sigma (for σ(0,1]\sigma \in (0,1]), log(1Δ)\log(1-\Delta) and (Δ)12tanh((Δ)12)(-\Delta)^\frac{1}{2}\text{tanh}((-\Delta)^\frac{1}{2}).
