Approximation of elements in henselizations

Commutative Algebra 2013-04-02 v1

Abstract

For valued fields KK of rank higher than 1, we describe how elements in the henselization KhK^h of KK can be approximated from within KK; our result is a handy generalization of the well-known fact that in rank 1, all of these elements lie in the completion of KK. We apply the result to show that if an element zz algebraic over KK can be approximated from within KK in the same way as an element in KhK^h, then K(z)K(z) is not linearly disjoint from KhK^h over KK.
