Antiprotonic Helium Atoms

Nuclear Theory 2011-04-15 v1

Abstract

Metastable antiprotonic helium atoms 3,4 ⁣H ⁣epˉe^{3,4}\! H\! e\bar pe have been discovered recently in experiments of the delayed annihilation of antiprotons in helium media. These exotic atoms survive for an enormous time (about tens of microseconds) and carry the extremely large total angular momentum L3040L\sim 30-40. The theoretical treatment of the intrinsic properties of antiprotonic helium atoms, their formation and collisions with atoms and molecules is discussed.
