An obstruction to $\ell^p$-dimension

Abstract

For any group GG containing an infinite elementary amenable subgroup, and any 2<p<2<p<\infty, there exists closed invariant subspaces EipGE_i\nearrow \ell^pG and F0F\neq 0 such that EiF=0E_i\cap F = 0 for all ii. This is an obstacle to p\ell^p-dimension and gives a negative answer to a question of Gaboriau.
