An improved bound for the optimal paper Moebius band

Abstract

In this paper we show that a smoothly and locally isometrically embedded Moebius band has aspect ratio at least 3(1/26)\sqrt 3-(1/26). (The actual bound, an algebraic number that arises in an optimization problem, is a tiny bit better.) Our bound improves significantly on the previous known lower bound of π/2\pi/2.

This paper is entirely superseded by my new paper "The Optimal Paper Moebius Band" (arXiv:2308.12641). This withdrawn paper makes partial progress on the conjecture that the new paper proves in full. Also, the new paper corrects an error in this withdrawn paper
