An example concerning set addition in F_2^n

Combinatorics 2017-11-15 v2 Number Theory

Abstract

We construct sets A,BA, B in a vector space over F2\mathbb{F}_2 with the property that AA is "statistically" almost closed under addition by BB in the sense that a+ba + b almost always lies in AA when aA,bBa \in A, b \in B, but which is extremely far from being "combinatorially" almost closed under addition by BB: if AAA' \subset A, BBB' \subset B and A+BA' + B' is comparable in size to AA' then BB1/2|B'| \lessapprox |B|^{1/2}.
