Agreement in Partitioned Dynamic Networks

Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing 2014-08-05 v1

Abstract

In the dynamic network model, the communication graph is assumed to be connected in every round but is otherwise arbitrary. We consider the related setting of pp-partitioned dynamic networks, in which the communication graph in each round consists of at most pp connected components. We explore the problem of kk-agreement in this model for kpk\geq p. We show that if the number of processes is unknown then it is impossible to achieve kk-agreement for any kk and any p2p\geq 2. Given an upper bound nn on the number of processes, we provide algorithms achieving kk-agreement in p(np)p(n-p) rounds for k=pk=p and in O(n/ϵ)O(n/\epsilon) rounds for k=(1+ϵ)pk=\lceil (1+\epsilon)p \rceil.
