Adjoining identities and zeros to semigroups

Abstract
This note shows how iteration of the standard process of adjoining identities and zeros to semigroups gives rise naturally to the lexicographical ordering on the additive semigroup of n-tuples of nonnegative integers and n-tuples of integers.
