Abstract

We prove that for n2n\geq 2, the size b(tn)b(t_n) of the smallest bidirectional scheme for the nnth Thue--Morse word tnt_n is n+2n+2. Since Kutsukake et al. [SPIRE 2020] show that the size γ(tn)\gamma(t_n) of the smallest string attractor for tnt_n is 44 for n4n \geq 4, this shows for the first time that there is a separation between the size of the smallest string attractor γ\gamma and the size of the smallest bidirectional scheme bb, i.e., there exist string families such that γ=o(b)\gamma = o(b).
