A note on the Gy\'arf\'as-Sumner conjecture

Combinatorics 2023-02-20 v1

Abstract

The Gy\'arf\'as-Sumner conjecture says that for every tree TT and every integer t1t\ge 1, if GG is a graph with no clique of size tt and with sufficiently large chromatic number, then GG contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to TT. This remains open, but we prove that under the same hypotheses, GG contains a subgraph HH isomorphic to TT that is ``path-induced''; that is, for some distinguished vertex~rr, every path of HH with one end rr is an induced path of GG.
