A Non-Standard Quark Model and the Mass Difference $\Xi^- - \Xi^0$

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology 2007-05-23 v1

Abstract

We show that a highly unconventional theory, based on the 16 dimensional (32{3\over2},32{3\over2}) irreducible representation of O(4), fits the masses of the baryons Ξ\Xi^-,Ξ0\Xi^0,Σ\Sigma^-,Σ0\Sigma^0,Σ+\Sigma^+,Λ\Lambda,pp,nn and the leptons μ\mu,ee,νμ\nu_\mu,νe\nu_e to within current experimental error, yet yields a prediction substantially different from that of Coleman and Glashow, namely ΞΞ0<6.1\Xi^- - \Xi^0 < 6.1 MeV. We discuss the ramifications of this very non-standard model in the hope to stimulate improved measurements of the ΞΞ0\Xi^- - \Xi^0 mass difference.
