A new class of generalized inverses in semigroups and rings with involution

Abstract

Let SS be a *-semigroup and let a,w,vSa,w,v\in S. The initial goal of this work is to introduce two new classes of generalized inverses, called the ww-core inverse and the dual vv-core inverse in SS. An element aSa\in S is ww-core invertible if there exists some xSx\in S such that awx2=xawx^2=x, xawa=axawa=a and (awx)=awx(awx)^*=awx. Such an xx is called a ww-core inverse of aa. It is shown that the core inverse and the pseudo core inverse can be characterized in terms of the ww-core inverse. Several characterizations of the ww-core inverse of aa are derived, and the expression is given by the inverse of ww along aa and {1,3}\{1,3\}-inverses of aa in SS. Also, the connections between the ww-core inverse and other generalized inverses are given. In particular, when SS is a *-ring, the existence criterion for the ww-core inverse is given by units. The dual vv-core inverse of aa is defined by the existence of ySy\in S satisfying y2va=yy^2va=y, avay=aavay=a and (yva)=yva(yva)^*=yva. Dual results for the dual vv-core inverse also hold.
